I looked up at the sky, felt the raindrops pelting on the wall above and slowly gliding down to eventually drip at the end to fall on my face and mix with my tears, the drop continued on it's downward journey, using my cheek as a slide and then fell down on the cold, muddy merciless earth below.
I couldn't control my tears anymore, couldn't control my growing dislike for myself to myself anymore.
I turned back and looked at Inayat, he was sleeping so peacefully, looked still like a sweetheart, but things have changed so drastically in my life that even i couldnot believe it. I sat slowly on the bed, looked at him, felt his breathing, felt him. I kept my fingers on his cheeks, he didn't feel like mine anymore. I didn't felt like his anymore.
An hour back, i was happily entwined with my love when i heard his mobile ringing. I tried to wake him up but he didn't budge an inch, so i thought of picking it up. I read the name 'Sweet luv' flashing on the screen which got my grey cells working in hyperdrive.
I answered it, the biggest mistake of my life, or was it the best thing that ever happened to me.
'Hey, Inayat'
'Sorry, Inayat has gone somewhere, he left his mobile on the desk' i lied, i decided to play safe.
'Oh' she paused for a second.
'Waise, who is this?'
'Zara'.
'OK Zara, could you do me a favour?' she said it in a tone, in which even God's heart would have melted.
'Yes'.
'Just tell him, that i'm coming back tomorrow morning. And i..' She paused, and i couldn't take the pause anymore. I felt my entire life crumbling right in front of my eyes.
'Yes, go on, don't worry'. I let out a forced laugh, some part of myself cursed me for doing so.
'OK, then tell him that i miss my baby'. The crumbling that began a few heartbeats back, finished, left my dreams shattered, my world barren.
'And whom should i say, is missing her baby'.
'Karishma'.
'OK, i'll inform him, Karishma, as soon as he comes back.'
'Nice talking to you Zara'. Oh, i hated myself for picking up her call.
'Pleasure is mine, bye.'
'B-bye',
i just couldn't control my tears anymore, as they broke through the dam of my self-defence, as even they went hay-wire. I heard the skies roaring as if in agony. Even the clouds couldn't control themselves, it started raining heavily.
I walked to the window, and opened the window panes, so that i could feel the rain. I could almost smell him on my body, i could still feel his lips on mine, and i hated every part of it. The rain that fell on my face, took my tears away with it. How could i have fallen in love with him, how could i love him with all my heart, when in reality he was faking it, from the beginning itself. Why didn't i see through his act and most
importantly, why me?
I picked up a page and wrote what he needed to know. I felt sick doing it. But i had to.
'Karishma called, shes's coming back tomorrow morning. Bye'.
I left this note on the table. I wore my clothes and took my belongings before leaving his room. But i guess i lost something.
I lost my heart somewhere in the room itself.

Trust
I looked at the buildings in front of my house, through the window in my room. As the sunlight sweeped across the earth, giving definitions to buildings which only a few hours back had looked dull and gloomy.
I dreaded the hours that would eventually come by rather than the haunted hours that had gone by.
I was dreading the moment my mother would come to check up on me. My mother whom i had met recently and whom Ive been told repeatedly was the one who took pains to bring me to this god-forsaken life
of mine. This fact alone fills my heart with so much hatred that sometimes i feel like shouting on her. But then ive always been successful in keeping my feelings in check even when other people did those dirty
things to me, never has anyone been able to peek at the darkest depths of my heart -because no one could, perhaps because no one would ever want to.
Someone opened my cabin and i deliberately tucked my face inside the blanket.
' Good morning beta, how are you today', the same voice whom people tell me is that of my mother, asked me. I knew that she was expecting a reply from me; but i didn't feel like saying something to her, didn't
actually knew what to say either but the fact was i was too afraid to do so.
Slowly, i turned over and faced her, i wanted to smile at her the way she was smiling at me, her eyes trying to convey some feeling which i couldn't understand, but sadly i don't remember the last time i had smiled.
My little brother came inside the room and sat down besides me. He touched my hand and said ' goodmorning didi, how are you feeling today'.
I almost jumped at his touch, i usually do when someone touched me. But i liked him, he hadn't harmed me yet but whenever i was alone with him a sudden bout of fear would grip me which i knew was irrelevant but somehow the feeling of being alone with a man inside a cabin was just too much for me to control.
' Take care of her Arav, until i come back'.
My mother told my younger brother, gave my hands a little squeeze, and went out of the cabin. My heartbeats slowly started pounding my chest, the rhythmic motion had transcended into a steady drumming
process. Being alone in a cabin with a man was more dreadful than painful, pain always came later.
Memories that still held on to my brain, after all these years came flooding back. I dont remember much of my life before i was kidnapped and was sold to a man. I actually don't even remember my parents - only the
person who 'bought' me features prominently in my memories. Then as these things are very hazy, later part of my life is crystal clear. The days that i spent in his servitude and those long nights of anguish and pain, those horrid things that they did to me made me a sponge, a shock absorber. People hitting me became a norm until the moment i began dreading human touch, loathing myself and my life.
These days continued till one day, police caught me and put me behind bars with other girls who had their faces covered due to shame, masking their actual identities. I didn't cover my face, because i didn't feel any
guilt, any shame - i actually felt well nothing at all. They dragged us to a van, while people kept flashing bulbs on us.
After many days of consistent interrogation where people asked me about my family and my identity - and finally gave up on me for i knew neither, until one day, my parents - whom i didn't recognise actually,
came in the police station and bailed me out. I didn't refute their claims then, coz i didn't knew how to - because i didn't want to.
Things had changed a lot since then but still i wasn't able to sleep in nights, the approach of night, the gradual reddening of the sky to black sent shivers down my body.
I felt his fingers entwine themselves in mine as he started talking about his school and his teachers - slowly i found myself loosening up, found my other hand feel his face as i felt my eyes moistning up, i started
crying - a new day had begun.

LOVE ACTUALLY…PART 2…

Zara looked at the smiling faces around her, and felt anguish at her life. She was to meet Nihal, but he hadn ’t
turned up yet, and if their horrid relationship was of any relevance then he wouldn ’t come at all.
Their relationship which was not even a year old was on the verge of its end, the romance had died a slow
death long back and Zara trying to salvage somehow their long lost love was doing so all alone and mostly in vain.
On the eve of Valentine day, she was hoping to rekindle their love when she received a SMS.
‘ Sry, kudnt kum 2day, m buzy, u tc. ‘
She stared at the screen for a long time. How could he? How can someone be so rude? No sorry, no explanations, not even a call? And she had been waiting like a fool for him for an hour. How could she let him make a fool out of her? How could he? These questions bombarded her mind. Her sitting
there and occupying a seat at the Austin Bakery made no sense to her. She felt like running away to a
secluded place and crying her out. She decided to end the relationship. She was only in second year at the college, she was too young to shoulder a relationship all by herself, there was a limit to everything.
‘Ma’am, you want another coffee’ A waiter who had been standing there for past two minutes unnoticed, asked her. She looked up at him, and tried to smile but couldn ’t. the tears building up in her eyes gave her away. She looked away.
‘No, thanks just bring the bill’ .
‘OK, ma’am’.
He left. She felt relieved.
‘Oh my God, I just can’t believe my eyes. Is it really you?’
‘Please, I’m not in a good mood.’ She said this without looking up. She felt irritated.
He sat down, without asking her.
‘Zara.’
She looked up. She couldn’t recognize him at once, nor did she put any pressure on her already taxed brain.
She stared at him blankly.
‘Zara, remember me? Long time yaar. ‘ He smiled.
‘Sorry, I don’t remember you.’
‘I thought so, but you are Zara, right.’
She nodded her head.
‘Aha, I knew it the moment I saw you. ‘
She was still giving him a blank look.
‘OK, so you don’t remember me, it’s natural. It’s expected actually. Remember Sushma Aunty, Rashmi
Aunt ’s best friend. ‘, he said excitedly but she couldn’t remember the details. The fog and mist that had made a home in her memory few moments back seemed to wither away reluctantly and slowly.
She narrowed her eyes. She never forgot people ’s face, name or number.
‘OK, now that’s embarrassing. ‘ He looked away. A young girl was sitting along with her boyfriend. He turned to her.
‘Excuse me‘, the girl turned to face him.
‘Do you mind if you could give me your lipstick.’
Her mind started ringing bells. The girl smiled and obliged. He smiled and held it up to her.
‘Now do you remember?’ Zara smiled. She remembered a kid with three lipsticks on his face, the
boy smiling out of his agony.
‘Amitosh.’ She smiled. He laughed.
‘You remember it, this is embarrassing.’
She laughed remembering that kid.
‘You’ve changed so much, I never..’
She didn’t remember much of what happened next. Everything happened so fast, everything was as if in a blur. She didn’t remember the bomb blast; she just recalled a deafening boom and fire. Her memory was muffled, after that. Cries of agony, of anguish, of dying people. She remembered someone picking her up, remembered clinging to someone as if her life depended on him, and remembered the shouts and the
screams on the road. She had her eyes closed, tight shut, and all the time while people kept crying around her, someone shouting for help, then being shoved into a car, someone holding her hand the whole time, saying something to her, all the while holding her tightly to his chest. She found peace there, she blacked out in his arms.
She opened her eyes. An old ceiling fan was rotating with cries of pain. She looked around, it was almost pitch black. She recalled what all had happened. The horrors of past few hours started haunting her. Slowly she absorbed the magnitude of what happened in the evening. Tears rolled down her cheeks, many must have died, many injured. Flashes of memory came rushing back to her.
She was sitting at Austin Bakery with Amitosh, when the explosion took place. But where was Amitosh?
She almost jumped up in the bed, when she felt someone ’s hand entwined in hers. His right hand which was all bandaged till elbow, was holding her hand, he was sleeping calmly. She thought of unclasping her hand,
but thought better. Her pieces of memory which were all like jigsaw puzzle till then slowly fell into places
on their own. She slowly crept back to her old position. She turned right to face him. She felt better with her
hands in his. She removed his hairs off his face. He was sleeping so peacefully. She smiled. She slept peacefully that night.

Love Actually - Part 1
I saw my mother arranging all kind of eating items on a tray, cashew-nuts, barfi and Uncle chips in a stylish way. I had no clue why my mother always used to arrange these, when in reality they had to end up in someone's stomach, and in order they ended up in mine I followed my mother happily swinging my cricket
bat. My mother's fast friend ( at least that's what my mother used to refer to her as) Rashmi Aunty had come over to meet her. I did what was expected of me, went to her, touched her feet and gave her a sweet smile, the unnecessary nuisances of life that had to be respected. She smiled back and gave me a kiss on my cheeks, i blushed. I heard a girl giggling, and that's when I noticed the beautiful girl looking a lot like her
beautiful mother, laughing her heart out.
I looked at her amused. She somehow managed to say amidst her fits of chuckles 'Mom, look at his cheeks,
your lipstick.' she started laughing again.
I could feel my cheeks blushing, I was blushing, I was hurt, not because of the lipsticks on my cheeks, I liked that, but because a girl my age was laughing on me. What she found amusing, felt like insult to me.
I turned back, thought of picking up a few chips, but then decided against it. My pride came in the
way of Uncle chips and my stomach.
I walked out of the room, and thought of finding my my criicket ball. The way to the salvation led through the realms of cricket field of me. I was about to crawl under the bed and search for it, when i saw her coming towards me. I abandoned my pursuit of the ball and began practicing my straight drive. Didn't wanted her to find me in a compromising position yet again.
I was barely 10 years old but that did nothing to dent my mountain sized pride.
' Hi'
I didn't reply back, instead i concentrated on the imaginary ball hurled towards me by Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram. I could feel her standing there. After playing the imaginary ball to fine leg, i noticed her.
' Hi' ' I'm Zara.'
' Amitosh'. I extended my right hand, I'd seen Shah Rukh doing so in a movie. She shook it only gently.
' So', I looked up at her, she wasn't saying much.
' Do you play cricket '?
' No.' I was trying to strike up a conversation, but she wasn't helping it.
' I can try '. She smiled. The deep dimples on her cheek looked really sweet on her but it wasn't enough to make me forget the embarrassment. She wasn't much into games, that was apparent.
' So what are you doing here. ' I said suddenly acting as if she was disturbing me.
' Actually, mom told me to play with you ' .
I should have known it. Why didn't i think of that before.
' Let's go outside '. I walked out of my room to the small garden that my grandmother had worked hard to maintain.
' So, you're in which class '.
' I've just passed 3rd '. That meant she was in 4th. But I was taller than her, and she seemed so much out
of my league, she looked so childish.
' I'm also in class 4th '. I said, walking upto the steps on the porch and sitting on the steps. She slowly meandered towards the steps. There was an awkward moment of silence, wherein i guess we
both felt uncomfortable.
' I'm sorry '. I was startled.
' What for ? '
' Well, there in the room, I laughed at you '.
The girls in my class never used to say sorry for anything, they were still immature - I always used to think so. But Zara, she suddenly seemed more in my league, as in more of a class 4th girl.
' Oh, it was nothing '. I still couldn't help blushing.
' You're blushing '. I smiled back. She was as if amazed. She sat next to me. She was smiling yet again. Those deep dimples were looking so good on her, they made her look angelic.
' Wait ', she said and rushed back inside. I sat there confused, thinking of a way to get back at her. She looked so beautiful when she smiled but the point that she was actually laughing on me made me feel
bad. I was deep in thought thinking of a way to get back at her, when i heard her voice again.
' Freeze '. I froze in that stupid stupor of mine. I guessed she wanted to play ' Freeze', with me so i complied. ' Close your eyes '.
Now i haven't played any such game yet, but i complied nevertheless. My mind went into hyperdrive thinking of what next. I wasn't going to let her fool me again. I heard her coming close to me, then i felt her standing in front of me. I was about to peep from the corner of my eyes when she said again ' Keep your eyes closed '. I was wondering what was she upto when i felt something on my cheeks, something that i had felt only a
few minutes back. She had kissed me. I opened my eyes and saw her smiling at me. Her lips were rosier than usual, and that's when i realised that she had put on Rashmi Aunty's lipstick. I jumped and ran to my room. The mirror showed me with two red spots in the shape of lips on my cheeks, one was bigger than the
other. I felt so humiliated that i wanted to run to my mother and complain about her, but i didn't go to her, for they would have laughed at me. My pride was taking a beating and i thought it was time to salvage some pride.
I went outside smiling.
' Thank you' .
She stopped giggling.
' Why '.
' Actually i'm looking better been kissed by two beautiful ladies '. She looked at me bemused.
' It was so sweet of you ', I told her. I spotted a rose plant and i ran towards it, plucked the biggest rose
flower in the plant, i knew my grandmother would hang me for doing so, but i would handle that some other
time. I walked back to her. Her smile had almost faded away from her beautiful face.
' This is for you '. She looked at me with those dreamy eyes, and i knew something was going seriously wrong in my head.
' Amitosh ', I heard my mother calling me.
' Why did you pluck the rose ', her temper was flaring.
' Auntyji, actually i had asked for it '. I looked at her. She was smiling.
' Ami ', Rashmi Aunty walked up to me and held my face, she turned it left, then right as if inspecting a fruit or a vegetable.
' You are looking so cute '. She laughed.
' Zara, you did this '. Zara nodded her head. Rashmi Aunty bent forward and planted another kiss on my
forehead. This was getting way too embarrassing for me. But i laughed with them, no use showing that i was
embarrassed to the core with three lips imprinted on my face i guessed.
After the formalities, a rickshaw was called and they went on it. We waved them goodbye and then my mother went inside the house. I kept standing there on the road, the rickshaw turned left on the next crossing, and i saw her smiling and waving her hand. I waved my hand back

"Didi, please read this SMS".
Zara took her sister's mobile and opened her message box. She read it to her.
"I have no reason to love you, but still i do, I have thousand of reasons to miss you, to remember you, but where are you? Please reply back love. You'll always be special to me. Please call me, it's been three days without hearing your voice. Can't live anymore without seeing you..."
Tears rolled down Zara's face as her sister who had in a freak road- accident, lost her vision, will never see him again.

He waited for her. He was in love but he hadn't informed anyone about it. His classmates seemed boring to him, the girls with the yellow and red ribbons in their hairs were even more so. They talked about trivial and unimportant stuff and laughed at silly jokes. Not upto his standards. The way she looked at him, made him feel weak in his knees. He hadn't felt like this before, cupid's bow had struck for sure.
'Class get up'. Everyone got up. His heart sang a new tune.
'Sit down', his 5th class English teacher, Zara said.
He smiled.

Hectic life
"Amitosh are you free in the evening."
I couldn't say 'no' to her, nor was i in any mood to say 'yes' either.
My 12th exams got over three weeks before and i had after a week's enjoyment brought back my mind from the parties and malls to my
study-desk. My IIT exams were approaching. The whole plethora of competitive exams were right on the threshhold of my house, just waiting for
their respective turns to ring the dorbell. And i wasn't about to give in to the pressure of exams. The hard work i will put in right now will
decide my future and my dream of becoming a game designer. i am confident of cracking JEE and if in any case i'll fail to make the grades then
definitely i will get admission in one of the better NIT's with my intended trade, computer science.
"Helloo, are you still immersed in your books?"
"Oh no, i was just working on my timetable - trying to extract time for you, my love."
"Really, i feel so much obliged, gosh... you really love the books more, don't you bookworm?"
I laughed. I wasn't about to say 'yes' to her; 'no' would certainly be commiting a personal hara-kiri.
"I was thinking of going to 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na', you'r coming Amitosh?"
"I heard it's a decent movie."
"Decent, you must be kidding me, i heard it's a wonderful and the hero, he's so cute."
'Cute - my heels dirt' I grumbled. I am not sure if she was really interested in the movie or if she was more interested in oogling at the
chocolate-faced hero on the big screen.
"The hero's fine, even the heroine looks fab."
"Nah, she aint that great."
"Don't be jealous, Istuti." I laughed. She sniggered.
"So, evening, Saharaganj."
I almost tried to kill myself by banging my head on the floor - but at the last moment, i controlled my emotions. A lot of my exam's syllabus
was still left. Thereso much to do. And there's never enough time. I feel pressured and hassled all day, everyday, 7 days a week.
There are just too many committments and all of them labelled 'urgent'. 'Wave Optics' beckoned me and so did Istuti. Which one was a priority
wasn't very clear.
"I'll pick you up at 6:00, the movie i guess will start at 6:30."
"This way we'll just be able to watch the movie; we won't be able to do windowshopping. Why don't you pick me up at 5:00?"
Girls are practically impossible. Sometimes i wonder if my best friend's policy is better than mine. He's got no contact with any girl and
devotes his full time on studies, while on the other hand i am continuously juggling with my girlfriends and studies. I understand that studies
are of prime imporatnce but the thought of spending time with Istuti also gives me a high.
"Sorry yaar, my exams are coming - i don't think i'll be able to manage more time out of the day." . There was a long pause from the other
side of the receiver.
"Now don't start sulking. Say something."
"How can a man be such a big book-worm?", I chuckled.
"Deal be ready by 6:00, and please this time just for a change try and be on time."
"It's not me, it's you who's always late." she quipped and i laughed.
"Take care honey, love you."
"Love you too."
"Love you three.", i laughed and rushed to my study table - time was less and the syllabus left was more. I only wished that if there were
more number of hours available to me in a day the how good will that be. I wouldn't compromise on my study and possibly for all the wrong
reasons i'll be able to spend more time with my love.
I picked up my HC Verma book and after few seconds of deliberation, i immersed myself in studies. There's still time left for my date, and i
was going to live every second of my life to the extreme.

realization
istuti wondered whether beauty really lied in the eyes of the admirer. if i did then why did only one man out of the crowd of million can identify her real beauty.she looked in the mirror and saw herself as she has always been, as she could always remember herself to be like . since she became concious of herself and other people around herself she remembered herself as a bright student, a good and obedient girl who obeyed all her seniors wishes and studied hard to be known and seen as a smart and intelligent girl. all she could think of from her chilhood was books and good books and some more books.in the mirror she saw a girl, with eyes that were intentionally dwarfed by the big glasses that she donned. her hair was nicely oiled and combedand sticking perfectly with the base of her skull. there was nothing that was uneven, nothing out of place yet nobody or perhaps no boy ever took any interest in heror more importantly never took pains to talk to her. she thought of the boys as some notorious creatures similar to monkeys though she never made any effort to interact either. she was afraid of using cosmetics that her friends used liberally, afraid that it might make her look quite unlike herself.it wasnt that she was very bad looking either - she just happened not to show much significant signs of womahood, signs which pulled boys towards her friends, but she never wanted to talk to boys, she believed in simple living. she believed that one must be content with the skin that god gave us and so she shunned all kind of cosmetics.she took out her big magnifying glasses and for some moments she couldnt recognise herself. it was hazy - but soon the mist in front of her eyes cleared. she took out her hairpin and let her hair fall to her shoulders.few hours back, she was returning from college in local bus when she met a boy - almost the same age. he came and occupied the vacant seat next to her. he looked at her and she looked away.
"what makes you think that you are beautiful enough for me to stare at you.", that boy retorted sarcastically.istuti looked at him - he smiled."OK, so you are the book-worm type.""no.""no,no its notyour problem - i believe you cant help it - being studious, 4 eyes are definitely an added advantage, dont you say.""excuse me, Mr. do i know you.""ofcourse you dont, but does that really matter."he smiled without looking at her." you mustn't be having any boy-friend either, do you."his comments hurt like daggers in istuti's heart but she didnt show it on her face."you are not that bad either, its just your attitude, your being a four-eyed genious and that oil on your head, and not to forget the books - i guess, but ofcourse you cant help it. can you?"the bus topped and he sttod up. he smiled and put his hand out but she was too numb to realise that she had to shake it as well. he didnt mind it either.she looked at her face - without her glasses and with her hairs all messed up." i am not that bad, am i" she smiled at herself. she picked up the lipstick from the table. she felt better.

behind closed doors......
the raindrops pelted down on my bare head, slided down crossing several turns to finally reach my lips. were the raindrops salty or was it the taste of my own tears. i didnt knew, nor did i give any thought to it. i continued my lonely walk. i had reached the twin karpa hill, and in a few more minutes i would be near the NDA boundary and if everything goes as per plan then i would run away from this god-forsaken place.
few moments later i was able to see the boundary, jutting out from the ground out of nowhere. i had already seen this place when i was learning map-reading from my seniors for my greenhorn camp. they had told me that a road is there 4 km out of the academy which leads to pune city.
i touched the boundary, looked up and saw no wire-mesh. soon i had climbed up the wall and looked down. the boundary was on top of a steep climb. i should have chosen a more suitable place but it really didnt matter.
i swung one leg out of the academy and one leg inside. it wasnt merely raining now- it was pelting. i was soaked to the inside of my skin, and i preferred it that way.
i just had to take one step and i would be out of the academy, but the repercussions would be severe - but not as severe as my staying in academy. i really wanted to escape out of the academy, i had started considering the defence life as a mousetrap - once u get struck, there aint no way out,you get trapped for bloddy twenty years. and what do you get after this long service, barely anything more than respect. i for one, dont give a dime to this so called respect - i would in fact prefer a much more lavish life - in which ill have to compete with the rest of the world and live a life full of competition, full of money and would prefer to live my life as per my own decisions.
i thought of my parents, they have tremendous faith in me and since i got selected, i had seen a visible change in their lifestyle, their attitude. they take enormous pride in the fact that i am about to serve the nation. how would they feel if i suddenly reached home and told them that i had run-away from the academy. possibly on my face they wouldnt blame me but it would really be disheartning for them.
but i really miss my parents here in the academy, i miss their talks, i miss their yelling, i miss the food but most of all i miss their love. i guess if i will run away from the academy then ill be closer to my family. i bet theyll never understand what it is to be trapped; to be behind closed doors with no means of communication - unable to convey my feelings to anyone; let alone myself. sometimes i dont even get to know my feelings, i dont get time enough to do that.
its not like i cant communicate, i can contact my family once a week, but i cant convey my feelings to them, cant tell them how it feels like to live in a burning hell, cant tell them that i want to leave the academy, because if i do then they would spent most of the time wondering what i ma going through. i dont want to make their life miserable. ii cant even think of giving them any cause for sorrow, even unintentionally. but i dont want to stay in the academy either.
i still remember my mother advising me not to go to NDA, but i was adamant - i wanted to fly a su-30. i cant blame anyone for the mess that i am in - people tried to talk me out of this.
what would i say to my parents if i ran away - what would i do? it was my decisions to come here and i dont want my family to mourn because of my one decision. i am trapped in here behind closed doors and i dont know whether to escape this prison or...........
i landed on my feet, and started running, running towards nothing, running away from the nothingness inside me. i didnt even realize when i crossed karpa hill and reached my squadron. the umbilical cord connecting me with my family has been stretched to its limit and i guess reducing its length might actually break it - so i prefer it that way.

The girl outside the window
The girl outside the windowby - pratyush raj srivastava
He felt the dark rainy clouds move in, felt the wind hit his face with its full fury. he could smell the coming rain. Amitosh put his palms on the window in his room and rested his face nicely in the middle of his palms. He closed his eyes.
He could feel her somewhere outside in one of the shops, listened to her converse with men – though he couldn’t decipher what she was saying but he was sure she was beautiful – she had a beautiful voice.
It started raining, the wind that was playing havoc with his hairs – slowly ceased to be caught up in one of the turns of his hairs. The rain belted down heavily on the window pain somewhere above his flat and water dripped from the above window pane. Some drops of which fell on his head. He felt good. In fact he had never felt better.
He stretched one of his palms outside to feel the speed of the rain – but in an instant took it back. It was hammering outside – like bullets ready to pierce his hands into countless many parts.
The murmur slowly subsided down yet that unmistakable voice of that beautiful lady still reached his ears. His experience told him that by this time water would have accumulated on the road and he had a feeling that if that rain didn’t stop then in no time it would submerge his apartment. Though something told him it wasn’t practically possible – but he really wished it would happen.
“Anuj”, he shouted.“coming”, came a voice from one of the rooms and he heard the chair to slide mercilessly on the floor. He felt relaxed. He was never sure of his younger brother. Sometimes he thought that his brother was ignoring his calls even when he was in his room, but in other times – he would come running. He adored his brother. Somebody kept a hand on his shoulder.
“What happened, bhaiya?”, Anuj asked.Amitosh smiled.” Its raining heavily isn’t it”.“yes bhaiya”.
‘how should I ask him’, was the question that rang periodically in Amitosh’s head. He wanted to know what his brother thought about that beautiful girl somewhere outside on the road.
“Can you see the beautiful girl standing down on the road”.
Anuj looked hard through the blur of rain which obstructed his view. He could see two girls standing under the shade of a tea-shop chatting with each other.
“Which one, left one or the one on the right”.“Listen and you will hear her voice. She has a great voice.”
Anuj was amazed because this was the first time his brother had shown any kind of interest in a girl. He tried hard to listen to what they were saying, but to no avail. He saw a woman who had a very young child tied to her back with the help of her sari. She was asking for money from the passerby’s who had taken temporary shelter during the rain.
“Can you see the person who just spoke”, Amitosh said excitedly.
Anuj looked at the woman with the child on her back. Her voice was clear and lucid.
Anuj’s eyes welled up – he couldn’t speak any more, he had no words to tell his blind elder brother that……………
